About the Semper Fi Society

The Semper Fi Society exists to develop leaders of character through shared hardship, service, and tradition. Based at The Citadel, we support cadets and Marines within the NROTC unit by creating opportunities that build physical toughness, mental resilience, and lifelong camaraderie.

Our mission is executed through leadership-focused events that challenge participants physically and mentally while reinforcing the values of the Marine Corps. These events are designed not just to test individuals, but to build teams and strengthen the broader military and civilian community that supports future officers.

To ensure long-term impact, accountability, and continuity, the Semper Fi Society partners closely with the Scarlet and Gold Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting leadership development, scholarships, and morale programs for The Citadel’s NROTC community.

The Bulldog Challenge

The Bulldog Challenge is more than a race. It is a test of grit, teamwork, and resolve.

Hosted annually by the Semper Fi Society, the Bulldog Challenge is a physically and mentally demanding endurance event designed to push participants beyond comfort and into growth. Teams navigate a course of just over six miles that incorporates Marine Corps–style obstacles, elements of the Combat Fitness Test, simulated casualty evacuation, and terrain that ensures no one finishes clean, dry, or unchanged.

Participants compete in two- or four-person teams, emphasizing leadership, communication, and shared responsibility. Whether you are an experienced athlete, a service member, or someone looking for a meaningful challenge, the Bulldog Challenge is built to be accessible, demanding, and unforgettable.

This event intentionally bridges the Charleston community, active-duty service members, veterans, and NROTC units from across the country in a shared test of endurance and purpose.

Where the Funds Go

All proceeds from the Bulldog Challenge are stewarded through the Scarlet and Gold Foundation and are used to directly support scholarships, leadership development initiatives, and morale programs for deserving cadets and Marines within The Citadel’s NROTC unit.

Scholarship recipients are selected based on a holistic evaluation of academic performance, physical fitness, military aptitude, leadership potential, and peer and cadre recommendations. These awards are designed to recognize and reinforce excellence while investing in the next generation of Marine Corps and Naval officers.

In addition to scholarships, Bulldog Challenge funds help sustain time-honored traditions such as the Marine Corps Birthday Ball and other leadership-focused events that strengthen esprit de corps and preserve continuity across generations.

Why It Matters

The Bulldog Challenge is more than a race—it is an investment in leadership.

By participating, sponsoring, or supporting this event, you are directly contributing to the development of future officers who will be entrusted with leading Marines and Sailors in complex, high-stakes environments where character, resilience, and teamwork are essential.

Every mile run and every obstacle overcome translates into real-world impact through the Scarlet and Gold Foundation’s mission.
